Year 1 vs ongoing pay

    Build each package

    Annualize base pay, then add estimated annual differentials and benefits for both your current role and the offer.

    Adjust Year 1 for one-time money

    Offer Year 1 equals the ongoing package plus sign-on, minus relocation and similar one-time costs. Current Year 1 equals ongoing unless you enter other one-time items.

    Compare the ongoing difference

    Ongoing annual difference is what remains after sign-on and relocation. Break-even months estimate how long a relocation gap takes to recover when ongoing pay is higher.

What is Year-1 cash versus ongoing annual?

Year 1 adds sign-on bonus and subtracts relocation or other one-time costs from the offer package. Ongoing annual (Year 2+) leaves those one-time items out so you can see the pay difference after the first year.

What should I put in annual differentials?

Your best estimate of nights, weekends, charge, and similar add-ons for a typical year. Use the shift differential calculator if you need help building that number.

How is break-even calculated?

When relocation costs exceed sign-on but ongoing pay is higher, break-even months is about ceil(|one-time net| / ongoing annual delta x 12). If one-time money is already non-negative and ongoing pay improves, break-even is immediate.

Does this include taxes?
