Eligible accredited graduate, postgraduate, or doctoral FNP program with APRN core (assessment, pharmacology, pathophysiology) and family/across-the-life-span competencies.
Clinical hours
At least 500 faculty-supervised direct patient care clinical hours. Didactic and clinical requirements must be complete before testing.
Exam & fees
150 items (135 scored) over 3 hours. Application: $240 member / $315 nonmember.
Renewal
5-year cycle. One option: 1,000 NP practice hours plus 100 advanced CE hours, including 25 pharmacology.

FNP-C certification FAQ
What does FNP-C mean?
FNP-C is the Family Nurse Practitioner credential awarded by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board. It is distinct from the FNP-BC credential awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
How many clinical hours are required for FNP-C eligibility?
AANPCB requires an eligible NP education program with at least 500 faculty-supervised direct patient care clinical hours. The program itself may require more.
How much does the AANPCB FNP exam cost?
AANPCB currently lists a $240 application fee for eligible AANP or AAENP members and $315 for nonmembers. Fees can change and should be verified before applying.
How long is the FNP-C exam?
The computer-based exam allows three hours for 150 questions. AANPCB states that 135 questions are scored and 15 are unscored pretest questions.
How is FNP-C certification renewed?
AANPCB certification is time-limited to five years. One renewal option requires 1,000 NP practice hours in the population focus and 100 advanced continuing education hours, including 25 in advanced practice pharmacology. A current handbook should be checked for all options and documentation.
